4 Ways You are Damaging Your Jewelry

You may be potentially damaging your jewelry and not know it! Here are 4 things you possibly do everyday that can be harmful to your baubles. Do you do any of these?

1) Do not wear your jewelry in the shower or in baths. Has this ever happen to you? You strip off your clothes, jump in the shower, and as you lather up you realize you still have your jewelry on. At this point, you're thinking "Eh, I don't want to stop, oh well." Because soaps and products on our body removes excess oils, they can also cause the gloss covering the metals to dull over time. This also goes for real silver and gold jewelry; to make their shine last longer and untarnished, avoid wearing them in the shower.

 2) Do not exercise or play sports in your jewelry. With a limited break or lunch hour, it would be a time saver to not fuss with the clasp of a piece of jewelry. However, sweat and excess oils from our body can also cause jewelry to tarnish too. Besides how funny would this look?
Time saver tip: after the gym, put the necklace on at your desk where your body has cooled down or in the car where you would have your regular clothes on.

 3) Do not wear make up around the areas with contact. This might not apply to all women but there are products out there such as body powder to reduce shine which can also cause dullness to metals and stones. If you apply lotion on your body, wipe down the jewelry at the end of the day because your body has probably diluted the lotion on to the surface of your jewelry.

4) Not cleaning your jewelry at the end of the day. It's common to think that only real silver and gold jewelry needs a bit of cleaning but we can also wipe down the oil, sweat, and dirt from fashion jewelry at the end of the day; build up of these can make anything lose their shine. Take a towel and just run your jewelry gently through the towel several times; DO NOT use water or cleaning products on fashion or costume jewelry. Specialized jewelry cleaning products can be used on silver and gold jewelry.
